This contemporary home, situated near Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, occupies a flat lot subject to strict Spanish Colonial and Mission-style zoning. The design addresses these requirements by drawing from local architectural precedents to create a flexible, multi-generational living environment.
Spatial logic and passive systems
The building’s form meets local scale and setback rules through stepped volumes. The ground floor centers on interior courtyards that create a microclimate, reducing cooling needs. Entry is through a hidden courtyard and a traditional Japanese genkan, which acts as both a thermal buffer and a functional transition space.
The main living, dining, and kitchen areas run parallel to the rear yard and connect to it through an engawa, a raised porch that provides deep shade and a smooth transition to the landscape. Floor-to-ceiling high-performance sliding glass doors on the main facades maximise daylight and support cross-ventilation.
Environmental performance and atmospheric control
The residence is designed for a net-positive energy balance. A central skylit stairwell serves as both a sculptural focal point and a vertical thermal flue, using the stack effect to draw warm air out and promote passive ventilation. It also brings diffused natural light to the home's core and discreetly contains high-efficiency mechanical systems.
The building envelope takes advantage of the region’s daily temperature changes. Passive solar design and strategically placed courtyards minimise heat gain, reduce operational carbon emissions, and maintain consistent thermal comfort.
The material palette contrasts the white stucco of neighbouring Mediterranean-style homes with Japanese building traditions, focusing on renewable resources and low-VOC finishes. The second level features shou sugi ban, or charred cedar, which is durable, sequesters carbon, and needs minimal chemical treatment for weather resistance, extending the building envelope’s lifespan.
Interior surfaces use natural clay plaster to regulate humidity and improve air quality. Custom white oak built-ins along circulation paths maximise space. The primary suite includes a slate-clad wet room with a traditional Ofuro wood-soaking tub, reinforcing the use of raw, minimally processed materials that age well.
By combining strict regional zoning requirements with traditional Japanese architectural elements, the project achieves both high spatial density and environmental efficiency. Passive cooling, durable materials, and multi-generational design ensure long-term functionality and minimize embodied carbon.
