In the village of Vlodrop, the newly completed De Sjpringplank stands as a vibrant symbol of community, education, and connection. This multifunctional accommodation brings together a primary school, childcare, sports facilities, and a library under one roof—serving as a central hub for learning, movement, and social interaction.
The building houses the Sint Martinus primary school, Leef Kind childcare, a spacious sports hall with foyer, and a school library. It was developed in close collaboration with the municipality of Roerdalen, local residents, and future users, ensuring the final result reflects the needs and identity of the community.
Architectural Concept
The architectural design was led by Povše & Timmermans Architecten • Ingenieurs, a firm known for its integrated approach and commitment to context-driven design. Their vision for De Sjpringplank was to create a building that is both functional and expressive—one that invites interaction and reflects the spirit of Vlodrop.
The building is designed as a pavilion, with a clear and open structure that allows for natural light and visual connections between spaces. The white facade, combined with glass surfaces and profiled cladding, gives the building a fresh and contemporary look. The sports hall, elevated and centrally located, is clad in asymmetrical profiled panels that add texture and dynamism to the exterior.
Distinctive V-shaped columns mark the entrances and support recessed facades, which provide natural shading and contribute to the building’s energy efficiency. The layout encourages interaction between its various functions—classrooms open to play areas, and the school connects seamlessly with the sports and community spaces.
Povše & Timmermans emphasized sustainability, flexibility, and user experience throughout the design process. Their philosophy—pleasure, passion, and professionalism—is evident in every detail, from the spatial organization to the material choices.
Realization and Collaboration
The project was realized by BINX Smartility, a contractor known for its innovative and collaborative approach. Key partners included MSP Dak en Wand from Heerenveen for the engineering and installation of the facades. Together, these teams delivered a building that not only meets functional needs but also enhances the quality of life in Vlodrop. As Councillor Loes Vestjens stated: “We’re giving a strong boost to the quality of life in Vlodrop.”
