Set along the wooded edge of Lake Shirakaba in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, Earthboat Cave is a compact timber retreat designed to immerse visitors in the landscape. Conceived by London-based architecture studio PAN- Projects under the philosophy of ‘nature escape’, the cabin demonstrates how small-scale architecture can reduce environmental impact while strengthening connection to place. Built entirely from Japanese cedar cross-laminated timber (CLT) and installed without permanent foundations, the structure rests lightly on the terrain, preserving the forest floor beneath it.
Site and environmental strategy
Lake Shirakaba’s cool mountain climate and dense tree cover informed the project’s compact footprint. Rather than clearing or reshaping the land, the cabin is positioned between existing trees, allowing the forest to remain visually and ecologically dominant.
The decision to eliminate traditional concrete foundations reduces embodied carbon and site disturbance. By lightly touching the ground, the structure protects root systems and natural drainage patterns. The cabin can also be removed or relocated in the future, reinforcing a reversible approach to development.
Large openings are oriented to frame specific views — notably towards the lake — while minimising unnecessary exposure. The building acts as a viewing device, tuned to its surroundings.
Cross-laminated timber as structure and finish
Earthboat Cave is constructed entirely from Japanese cedar CLT panels. The material serves both structural and interior finish functions, eliminating redundant layers. By leaving surfaces exposed, the design reduces additional cladding, plaster, or applied finishes, lowering material consumption.
Cedar’s natural insulation properties support thermal comfort in the mountain climate. The mass of the CLT panels moderates interior temperatures by slowing heat transfer, while the breathable quality of timber contributes to a stable indoor environment. Over time, the wood will patinate, allowing the cabin to register seasonal change.
Using locally sourced cedar reduces transportation emissions and supports regional forestry practices. The timber sequesters carbon throughout its lifecycle, offsetting a portion of the structure’s embodied impact.
Living outside the envelope
Rather than centring the experience indoors, Earthboat Cave prioritises outdoor occupation. A compact sauna, accessible directly from the exterior, provides warmth in colder months. Outdoor steps and small fireplaces create gathering points that extend daily use into the forest.
This emphasis on exterior living reduces reliance on conditioned indoor space. Visitors adapt to natural temperature variations rather than relying entirely on mechanical systems.
Light, simplicity, and spatial restraint
The interior layout remains deliberately simple: a sleeping area, compact kitchen facilities, and a space for observation. Light enters through multiple openings, shifting in tone throughout the day. The main window frames the lake, turning the act of looking outward into a central architectural gesture.
Minimal artificial lighting and restrained finishes maintain focus on texture, grain, and shadow. The interior remains tactile and calm, reinforcing the retreat’s restorative purpose.
