Summary
Design brief was to convert and restore two floors of a sought-after former Victorian warehouse building within conservation area into separate large luxury penthouses. Showpiece of each 252 m2 large apartment is a spectacular living room with open-plan layout and large sash-windows providing light and airy rooms. Each apartment contains three bedrooms with separate en-suites, two independent lobbied entrances, Guest-WC, plant and utility rooms.

Project Description
Due to it's industrial history, central London still has a substantial number of 19th century warehouses spread throughout it's boroughs, which primarily over the last decades have been converted into either residential, life-work or also office spaces. This specific warehouse block was converted mainly into flats in the mid 80'ies, however not all parts of the building were developed and some still are commercial spaces.

Together with our client we envisioned the opportunity to form two generous penthouse apartments withlarge living spaces in combination with a series of compact bedrooms, reflecting contemporary living standards of east London, the creative hub of the city. The open-plan layout is designed generically allowing flexible occupant usage with variable allocation of different living, dining and working islands.

Original historic cast iron features were retained and restored while industrial floor/wall finishes like the solid oak parquet were chosen to complement the former warehouse character providingboth durable andsustainable surfaces, while the natural oak color variation creates a unique pattern every time the long/slim Oak staves (made by Oak off-cuts) are put together.

The remaining interior surfaces of the apartment were kept color-neutral providing a generic structure, to enable the client and future occupants to inhabit the various spaces with own furniture and colors.
