This façade renovation consisted of a new screen and canopy over an existing commercial façade, new address identification numbers, and replacement of all the exterior glazing. The design had to do something interesting while pacing the building’s severe length per the client’s request. Additionally, the existing rooftop mechanical units had to be screened per the City of Glendale’s request. The City helped fund the project as part of an initiative to encourage interesting façade renovations in the area, and the design was subject to their approval.
The project manipulates the local typology of commercial storefronts with a signage zone above a canopy overhang. However, a ‘tube frieze’ is inserted in the place of the signage. 1,800 linear feet of undulating stainless steel tubes create an ornamental band inspired by the surface of the nearby ocean. The rusted steel canopy and screen beneath, which contrast with the stainless steel tubes, are a nod to the area’s industrial character. The existing masonry wall was painted ‘street striping yellow’. A continuous interplay of light and shadow, contingent upon your driving proximity and time of day, is created as a counterpoint to the abundance of signage around Los Angeles.
