Halogen is a new construction luxury apartment community at the site of a former movie theater in Phoenix, Arizona. Combining classic modern lines, subdued desert colors with pops of jewel tones, bold and playful accents playfully repurposed from salvaged theater elements to create a fun and sophisticated spaces that subtly reference the glitz and glam of the Hollywoodmovie experience.
The exceptional architectural and interior design thoughtfully integrates functionality, aesthetics, and community-focused amenities. The central amenity hub is strategically placed to foster social interaction, wellness, and a diverse range of activities for residents. The standout custom meeting pod structucture and lighting elements sculpturally envelop you with warmth and texture while providing a more intimate scale of space within the open layout of the clubhouse.
The project also excels in its use of space and materials. The fitness center is designed to accommodate all levels of physical activity, from beginner to advanced, promoting wellness throughout the community. Outdoor spaces, including a dog park, resort-style pool, courtyard, and BBQ areas, have been meticulously planned to ensure maximum appeal and accessibility to all residents. The creative use of building materials throughout both the interior and exterior elevates the design quality, blending modern finishes with functional spaces that enhance the living experience. Together, these elements create an architectural masterpiece that is not only efficient in terms of site and floor plan design but also visually striking, ensuring a lasting impression on all who encounter it.
The careful layout of co-working spaces, a media lounge, and a social kitchen creates dynamic social hubs that encourage both casual gatherings and more structured events. This commitment to providing spaces for collaboration and connection is enhanced by the inclusion of a conference room and private offices, which cater to the increasing demand for flexible, work-from-home solutions. These spaces effectively support a wide range of activities, from podcasting and social media content creation to virtual meetings and traditional remote work.
One of the most unique constraints in this project was the adaptive reuse of salvaged items from the original theater. These items, rich in history and cinematic character, had to undergo a meticulous process to determine how they could be repurposed in a way that both honored their past and enhanced the overall design. The challenge was not just about finding ways to incorporate these elements but also about reimagining their original function to suit the needs of the new space while ensuring they met current building codes.
For example, the exterior building signage letters, originally part of the theater's exterior signage, were creatively reconfigured to spell "heart rate" at the fitness center, transforming them into a functional and artistic element that aligned with the space’s theme. Movie theater poster boxes were repurposed as lightboxes for artwork and a backlit wall graphic element, seamlessly blending nostalgia with modern design. Vintage spotlights, once used to illuminate the stage, found new life in the mailroom, where they were transformed into a playful and unexpected installation. These creative solutions not only preserved the historical essence of the original theater but also added unique, functional, and visually engaging components to the new design, turning constraints into opportunities for innovation.
