Hotell Brosundet

Hotell Brosundet
Marte G Johnsen

Hotel Brosundet has been designed in a warehouse along the harbour in the historical part of Ålesund on the west coast of Norway. The warehouse was built as part of a prestigious rebuilding effort after the great fire of Ålesund in 1904. The building is listed and is situated in the middle of a National Art Nouveau Landmark.

The hotel consists of only 47 rooms and has a very intimate atmosphere with almost every room featuring a different layout. The heavy duty wooden beam constructions have been left exposed in all rooms and, along with the brushed brick walls this makes a beautiful contrast to the new elements.

The minimalistic design of the bathroom interiors stands out as shiny, clear-cut jewels of cream tiles and frosted glass. The exposed wooden construction is highly characteristic, leaving plenty of room to tone down the contrasts without losing the character of the building.

The furniture was designed with refined detailing in white, stained oak to link the rawness in the construction to the modern bathroom elements. As a supplement to the hotel, a single suite has been designed in the nearby Lighthouse ‘Molja’. The 13m2 suite is spread over two floors and consists of an entrance, a bathroom and a bedroom with a semicircular bed fitting the shape of the lighthouse. The windows allow the guests to overlook the sea front of Ålesund and the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon.

Brand description
For more than 25 years, Snøhetta has designed some of the world's most notable public and cultural projects. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, the National September 11th Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art expansion. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original self-defined transdisciplinary approach, integrating architectural, landscape and interior design in all of its projects. Snøhetta is currently working on a number of civic and cultural projects internationally including the expansion of the Times Square reconstruction in New York City; the Willamette Falls Riverwalk in Oregon City; the Lascaux Caves IV Museum in Montignac, France; the Calgary Public Library and Library Plaza, in Alberta, Canada; and The French Laundry kitchen expansion and garden renovation in Yountville, California. Among its many recognitions, Snøhetta received the World Architecture Award for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the Aga Kahn Prize for Architecture for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Since its completion in 2008, the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet has also garnered the Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Architecture and the EDRA (Environmental Design Research Association) Great Places Award as well as the European Prize for Urban Public Space, The International Architecture Award and The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2010. Snøhetta has studios in San Francisco; New York; Oslo, Norway and Innsbruck, Austria.
