W House

The building is designeg on a large and picturesque plot in the suburb of Warsaw. It is surrounded by a pine wood and a couple of summer houses sprinkled in close vicinity and further. The natural shape of the terrain is an uphill slope towards the south and the north, forming a small hill, flattened on the top. It was the aim of the architects to connect the new building to the natural context of the plot with a calm, harmonious design. Since the programme was extensive, a decision was taken to split the house up into a couple of smaller buildings, thus avoiding a massive form that would dominate over the plot. On the side of the street, the house is two very simple shapes of equal height and proportions, contrasted only by façade material. From the interior of the plot, the house reveals its floor hidden in the hill slope. The functional setup of the house is closely bound to the form. The black cube houses the kitchen, dining room and the living room. The space over the living room is open through two floors, up to the roof, while there is a small mezzanine study over the kitchen and the dining room. The white house contains the technical part, with the boiler room and a two-car garage. The ground floor contains mainly sleeping rooms for the numerous inhabitants. The staircase between the two floors is located in a small connector between two houses. The connector encompasses also the main entrance to the building and the wardrobes. There are many terraces around the house on various levels, allowing the inhabitants to take advantage of the attractive forest surroundings.
