Joseph Phelps Vineyards

BCV Architecture + Interiors as Architects

BCV‘s renovation of the former production facility at Joseph Phelps Vineyards created a new hospitality and guest center for the winery. The architects were inspired by the dramatic wood construction of the original building, and worked within the volume of the space to create a variety of new tasting rooms, retail and reception areas, a new second floor for staff offices and a greater connection to the surrounding landscape. The project brings under one roof many different operations of this family-owned winery, while preparing Joseph Phelps to grow its hospitality program for years to come.

While early discussions brought up the possibility of tearing the building down entirely, both architect and client agreed that its importance to the winery meant that it should be preserved. After relocating guest parking, a new entry pathway was designed to take advantage of the stunning original trellis that bisects the building, creating an unforgettable arrival sequence.

The interior mixes the history and character of the original building with new design elements, imbued with personal touches from the Phelps family, including artwork from its private collection and an array of bottles enjoyed by founder Joe Phelps and friends. The winery is comprised of grand spaces like the Great Hall – perfect for larger groups, as well as more intimate rooms for guided tastings and small parties. Looking out onto the terrace, the Oval Room and adjacent dining room (created alongside a new kitchen to expand the winery’s culinary program) take advantage of expansive glazing and panoramic views over Spring Valley Ranch.

Interior details like the trusses along the Great Hall – designed as both a structural solution and a reference to the entry trellis – as well as custom climate-controlled casework and lighting throughout, integrate seamlessly within the overall structure. Interior trusses integrated into the structural system of the building reference Davis’ exterior trellis and guide visitors toward the Barrel Room at the far end of the hall. The Barrel Room includes a mural-sized photograph of the ranch’s estate vineyards and houses the winery’s latest vintages in barrel.Off the Great Hall, the Library was developed to tell the winery’s history through an impressive visual of past vintages. Custom climate-controlled displays offer guests a catalogue of renowned wines.

Located on the vineyard side of the building, the Oval Room offers a relaxing environment with expansive windows that frame views of Spring Valley and the Mayacamas mountains. Outside, an expanded terrace and patio bring increased opportunities for guests to enjoy their visit overlooking the vineyard.
