The steel was allowed to rust looking for a reddish brown tone that would match the colors of the earth and stones. Then, once the tone was achieved, a lacquer-type seal was applied that stops the oxidation process and protects it from the elements. The coldness of the concrete compensates with the warmth of the stones and rust to deliver an interesting composition of materials.
