The new ‘Land van Winkel’ quarter, an urban development plan in municipality Abcoude by landscape bureau La4Sale, borders on the north side with a 1070s expansion. On the south side the new quarter makes a transition to the surrounding peat river landscape. The ambitious quality plan sets out specific requirements for volume, plasticity, detail, material and color for each plot, so that each home differs from its neighbors. Partly because adjacent plans have been designed by different architects, a varied and apparently organically grown street scene with a village atmosphere is created.
The channel flows in the middle of the Land van Winkel. On the branch of this channel, an ensemble with three striking wooden landscaped houses called ‘Lakenveld’ is being designed. The mirrored volume on the water side, contains two houses. In the middle of the volume, the shell folds inward, creating an outdoor terrace on the water. The living areas are grouped around this outdoor space. This ensures that the evening sun falls deep into the house.
The main house is located at the end of the small headland, where the channel splits and is visible from all sides. Cuts in the three-layer volume provide sheltered places from the morning and evening sun. A chimney is extra enlarged and expressively designed and forms the anchor point of the whole plan. The wooden shell of the houses is made of finely sawn planks in a deep red color, in which the contrasting cuts in the volume are finished with a smooth white band.
Due to the careful materialization and detailing, the expressive shape of the main house and its anchoring on the site, the ensemble is a real eye-catcher in this central location in the new quarter.
