Scenographic project
The scenographic project that was conceived by Jakob+MacFarlane for the MASTERS OF CHAOS exhibition shapes and structures a large tubular space subdivided into cells that present the various artistic themes. This space thus becomes a system, which the visitor will be projected into, immersed in and finally ejected from at the end of the exhibition. It is a genuine experiment and initiation for the public along a path of discovery. The scenography highlights the different settings, paces the unveiling of the pieces to the public and creates a dynamic that leads and directs the viewer through an open circuit, frozen neither in time, nor in space. A voyage of initiation that invites viewers to explore various themes and to operate a self-transformation as they pass through the exhibition. This transformation is made possible not only by the conceptual content of the exhibition but also by its scenography.
The scenographers submitted a project based on the simplest of building materials, often left unfinished and "rough", so as to evoke a world of intentions, ideas, constantly changing positions. A steel structure covered with gypsum drywall reinforced with tows, this construction thus truly becomes one, bound through its materials as the skeleton, ligaments and skin of an organic body. The way the structure is put together and installed is both ancient and modern, manual and industrial, thereby reinforcing the notion of a project that could constantly appear as evolving...
Light settings are also an integral part of the exhibition. Jakob+MacFarlane has opted to emphasise a rough look and a strong presence of lights. Vortices have thus been installed in the central unit where power cables can be seen hanging from the ceiling. They materialise the link between the earth and the beyond, the profane and the sacred, the perceptible and the intelligible.
The purpose of Jakob+MacFarlane's design is to highlight the works of art and to immerse the viewer into an experience of light and materiality, creating different atmospheres and emotions along this journey. The scenographic design is an integral part of the project, its significance and its evolution.
Jakob+MacFarlane have carried out a number of projects: the Georges restaurant at the Georges Pompidou centre (2000), the reconstruction of the Pont-Audemer theatre in the Eure department (2000), the Florence Loewy - Books by Artists bookshop in Paris (2001), Renault’s New Communication Centre in Boulogne-Billancourt (2004), the Maxime Gorki theatre (2004), the Ricard Corporate Foundation (2007) as well as the Paris Docks, the Cité de la mode et du design and the 100 Hérold housing units in Paris (2008).
Jakob+MacFarlane have also created the scenography for the following exhibitions: TEOTIHUACAN, Cité des Dieux, shown at the musée du quai Branly (2009-2010), “Apartment of the future” at the Palais de Tokyo (Nuit Blanche 2003) and “Identification d'une ville, architectures de Paris” at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal (2002).
