Link LOFT This project resides in River West atop a converted warehouse. It's a double-height space, which soars to roughly 20'. The program consists of: bench/storage, fireplace, flue, mantle, guardrail partitions, & handrail. Our encompassing idea was to link the three spaces; living room, study, & stairway; thus creating greater cohesion. This also allows for the two floors to communicate.
The clients have a love of warm, rich materials, in addition to eco-friendly options. We incorporated an aluminum toekick, cherry cabinetry, quartzite bench, recycled steel fireplace surround, eco-resin flue/guardrail panels, aluminum tube handrail, perforated metal mantle, and a plasma dual-fuel fireplace insert.
The fireplace composition was envisioned & erected as a building w/ in a building. There is a base for seating, a functional '2nd floor', and shimmering panels above that echo the skyline, seen to the east. The mantle also reaches out like a pedestrian bridge, adding functional space for artwork, and also connecting the other parts of the project. The perforated metal mantle, stretches to a new angular framed platform. This becomes the stage for the translucent guardrail panels above. Shimmering light permeates from above via a large skylight.
Finally, the undulating handrail in the stairway pulls the project together.
TEAK Sheet For this project, the client had very specific wants & needs. The existing queen mattress was to fit low into a custom platform structure. It needed to accommodate drawers, shelves, & Bose speakers. Switches were desired for reading lights & recessed cans in the ceiling above. An expressive headboard was also requested. Off the foot of the bed, lies a corner cabinet & shelf that conceals a rising flat-screen tv.
To accomplish the functional & aesthetic goals, a wooden blanket concept evolved. An oak structure & shelves are sheathed by a teak 'blanket' that wraps from one tower around to the other. Each shelving tower was tailored to the two clients; one taller w/ more closed storage & the other shorter & more open for display. The platform recedes on both sides for ease of getting in & out of the bed.
A Dali cork headboard becomes an accent piece, that along w/ the rich teak/oak combo, both tie into the heavy timber loft setting. Speakers are hidden at the top of each tower diffusing stereo sound to the perimeter. Micro reading lights w/ individual switches allow one person to read, while the other watches tv, or ultimately sleeps.
