A special location deserves a special building. The new headquarters of Marquard & Bahls AG were built on one of the last vacant spaces of the central Port City in Hamburg. The characteristic brick and mortar building makes a self-confident urban expression and conveys the company’s motto: Independent, Solid, Determined.” Elegant yet robust, it harmoniously fits into the exclusive neighborhood and sets its own clear accent. A design and functional highlight is the unique city balcony: a large section of the facade that connects the inner atrium with the urban landscape. Through it, one has a magnificent view of the waterfront also from the inside rooms.

This way, both the building and the company convey a sense of bright openness to the city and the world. Another eye-catcher is the eighth floor, with its stacked storey that forms a high- and endpoint of the building along Brooktorhafen and the Lohsepark. The new headquarters was created with the utmost sustainability standards and offers space for working and the well-being for 700 employees. The ground floor greets employees and guests with attractive catering and retail areas.

Among other honours, the design was awarded as a winner in the category architecture at the German Design Award, one of the most recognized design competitions in the world. Nine architectural firms from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands took part in the competition tender, which was finally won by the design of Gewers Pudewill.
