Masterplan &Elementary School - Rumst

LOW architecten as Architects

'School op pootjes' is the appropriate name for the extension of the elementary school Eikenlaar in Rumst. The newly developed classes are lifted from the ground, with big windows allowing the natural light to trickle through easily and looking over the open space of the playground in the middle.Lifting the classes was an easy yet intelligent concept to create more space and a covered playground for rainy days.

LOW architecten was responsible for the master planning, the design and the construction of this school. A save kiss & ride, improved parking possibilities, new classrooms, a gymnasium, a fully glazed refectory… are all implanted in an efficient way.

The playground in the middle creates a place with a great social function where students, parents, visitors, etc. meet each other. The geometric patterns lend a playful character to this elementary school in Rumst.

Refectory, gym and classrooms have other uses. One of the sustainability principles for the project 'School op pootjes' is the flexibility of the heating system in function of the use. This way energy consumption is reduced to the absolute minimum.
