Nafud Museum

Nafud Museum is a conceptual museum complex for Saudi Arabia — a cultural landmark conceived around the terrain, traditions, and civic ambitions of a country investing in culture as national identity. This project originated as an internal CUUB Studio initiative, designed and visualised entirely by the studio to demonstrate what civic architecture rooted in Saudi heritage could become.
The volumes are drawn from the Saudi landscape. Oval, curvilinear forms, rising from the desert floor the way natural formations do — no edges, no interruption, the same logic that shapes a dune or smooths a pebble over centuries. The palette stays close to the ground: beige, warm ochre, the tone of desert stone in afternoon light. Too bold to disappear into the landscape, but not breaking from it either.

The exterior surfaces read differently at every distance. From afar, monolithic and sculptural. Up close, the material reveals itself as almost woven — layered, intricate, tactile. Arabic motifs run through both exterior and interior with restraint. Calligraphy appears on interior walls as surface, integrated the way script is integrated into traditional Islamic space. The reference points are ancient; the interpretation is entirely contemporary.

Light was treated as two separate conditions. Outside, soft and diffuse — the way desert sunlight scatters, making form readable without drama. Inside, shadow deepens, the atrium pulls light from above, and certain moments feel older and more monumental than a contemporary building has any right to. Fluid ceiling forms mirror the dune geometry outside, keeping the relationship between surface, light, and human scale a single continuous idea.

A museum at this scale becomes part of how a region defines itself — for its own people and for everyone who arrives from outside. That's what this concept was built toward.
