Neptune House

Steven.Lombardi.Architect as Architects

The Neptune remodel is unique in its success of maximizing space on a restricted site. The addition, only 250 square feet, stands 30 feet tall to emphasize the vertical space and volume, adding 4,212 cubic feet. The light tower provides panoramic ocean and mountain views and features a 10 by 12 foot glass door creating an indoor / outdoor space including a garden and an outdoor fireplace.

The use of simple materials provides a play in light, color and texture. The new exposed steel rods and steel flange beams create a structural frame to support the existing roof, while Douglas fir beams, maple 11-ply wall panels, bamboo floors, mahogany windows and doors give a rich, sustainable warmth. The concrete kitchen counter, stone bathroom showers, and stacked stone walls create rough texture and sharp edges. The stair in the great room marries these materials together by combining mahogany treads atop steel supports protruding from a stacked sandstone wall.

The metal roofing radiates heat and the thickly insulated walls and ceilings work in the concept with high windows that both ventilate and collect solar heat to reduce HVAC load and overall carbon footprint.
