Nimbus - Teknion Advanced Concepts 2.0

The future workplace prioritizes user agency, sustainability, and technological integration, shaping environments that adapt to the evolving needs of a dynamic workforce.

Advanced Concepts 2.0 is a research- and design-driven exploration of emerging workplace paradigms developed for Teknion following a competitive design process, in which our team was selected to advance three future workplace concepts. Positioned between speculation and application, the project investigates how work environments can evolve to support flexibility, wellbeing, and new modes of collaboration.

Conceived to respond to shifting work patterns, heightened wellness expectations, and increasing technological integration, the initiative introduces three concepts – PetPod, RoamStation, and the Nimbus Adaptive Architectural System. Each explores new approaches to flexibility, user agency, and environmental performance, translating research into full-scale spatial propositions that reimagine how workplaces can function, adapt, and support the people who use them.

Nimbus transforms flexible workspaces with retractable, translucent pillars that filter natural light, modulate acoustics, and adapt environments on demand.

Nimbus proposes a kinetic alternative to static partitions through a ceiling-suspended field of fabric-like pillars with integrated lighting that can be deployed or retracted to dynamically reconfigure interior space. The system creates a fluid and responsive environment while maintaining the spatial definition, privacy, and acoustic control typically associated with enclosed partitions. It enables workplaces to shift seamlessly between open and partially enclosed conditions, forming breakout areas, meeting zones, or soft boundaries within a cohesive atmospheric framework.

The pillars are crafted from durable high-density polyethylene fibres, drawing from folding forms such as origami, and offer translucency, sound attenuation, and a rich tactile quality. Integrated diffuse lighting, including circadian settings, provides a soft ambient glow that supports focus and visual comfort. Through embedded memory-wire technology, the pillars can be controlled individually or in groups, allowing users to shape and adapt their surroundings with ease.

Together, the three concepts explore how flexibility and user control can contribute to healthier, more adaptable work environments. Advanced Concepts 2.0 frames the workplace as an evolving ecosystem that responds to occupant needs, supports well-being, and adapts to continual shifts in work culture.
