Valtikos Architecture Practice has redefined the concept of a dental clinic with Odontomorphosis, located in a 1930s listed Mid-war building in the heart of Athens. This 185 sq.m. elevated ground-floor space has been transformed into a modern yet historically sensitive practice, merging the heritage of its setting with contemporary functionality and aesthetics.
The design embraces the building’s original character while fostering a calming environment for patients. Every detail—colors, materials, lighting, and furniture—has been thoughtfully curated to provide a cozy yet professional atmosphere, ensuring comfort without compromising the clinic’s operational efficiency.
Upon entering, patients are greeted by a “living room” that overlooks the verdant Didotou Street. Warm copper tones set a soothing rhythm for the interiors, inviting relaxation and ease. This transitional space establishes a gentle gateway to the more clinical areas.
In the treatment rooms, the ceiling's deep blue hue and circular light fixtures create a serene backdrop, allowing patients to feel at ease during procedures. Cutting-edge dental chairs, complemented by luxurious cabinetry, balance functionality with a refined aesthetic. Retro-modern furniture choices further enhance the design’s harmony with the building's historical context.
The elongated reception area is a focal point, with its signature curve and striking circular window—a modern addition that seamlessly integrates into the historic framework. A custom linear luminaire emphasizes the curve, while a colored wall strip accentuates the space’s rhythm. In contrast, the reception desk’s prismatic form introduces a bold counterpoint, providing visual intrigue and necessary storage.
Each room is designed as a unique microcosm, offering varied visual and spatial experiences. Behind the reception, the meeting room and waiting area continue the theme of thoughtful transitions, each maintaining its own character.
The corridor, lined with authentic concrete tiles, leads to secondary areas such as the patient WC and staff zones. Hidden lighting along the ceiling evokes an open, pergola-like feel, subtly elevating these functional spaces.
In the staff areas, deep burgundy tones derived from original concrete tiles define the sterilization zone, blending practicality with understated glamour. White furniture, accented by black detailing, reinforces a sense of purity, while hidden lighting lends a sense of lightness to space. The restored kitchen at the apartment’s western end pays homage to the building’s past, thoughtfully blending old and new.
The design reflects a commitment to sustainability, using durable materials and efficient lighting solutions. By translating the clinic’s functional requirements into an architectural language of care and precision, the practice achieves a balanced dialogue between past and present. Odontomorphosis is a testament to how meticulous design can transform a medical space into an environment that respects its history while embracing modernity, offering both comfort and sophistication to patients and staff alike.
