Austin TX-based architecture and interior design firm Dick Clark + Associates has been championing contemporary architecture since 1979. The award-winning firm has recently finished a home in Austin’s historic Clarksville neighborhood, a beautiful example of their focus on design with a sense of place. The home on Palma Plaza takes design cues from the neighborhood and interprets them in modern materials. Most homes in the area are bungalows and Craftsman style from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, rendered in stone, wood and stucco. The Palma Plaza home incorporates smooth cut limestone to reference the brick, along with even stucco for a pristine finish. The deep rich wood framing the front and side entries adds warmth to the facades. Positioned on an interior city lot, the front façade seems narrow, but the home uses the entire lot and includes multiple indoor/outdoor moments to create an airy, comfortable space. Three pocket yards on the sides and back of the property open up the house and connect it with the outdoors. Inside, large windows connect to vaulted ceilings, maximizing the effect of natural light by bouncing it off smooth angles. The home was originally built as a spec house, but was purchased mid-construction when the neighbors from two doors down fell in love with the property. They were able to collaborate on the interior finishes, reflecting their own personalities. The home was built in partnership with Vinson Radke Homes, the second partnership between the firms, reflecting their shared eye for detail and emphasis on design.
