Parkveien 5 b-c

The site consisted of a narrow strip of land between two adjacent fire walls, in use as the entryway to a power station, 7 meters wide and 28 meters deep. The building site was challenging, to say the least, with the tram running less than three meters from the facade 18 hours a day.

This house contains nine flats, from 18 to 137m2 on that plot, while still maintaining the passage to maintain the power station.

To make the most out of what we were building the structure is supported by and supports the neighbouring house, sharing for instance modernized fire escapes.

Apartment plans are compact but well lit, from the front and rear facades, and with a light well that penetrates the central staircase. The material strategy is limited to a number of high quality materials.

The main structure is concrete post-and-beam with facades made of copper and heat-treated pine, with exposed concrete and painted steel.

Interiors are featured with exposed concrete, white painted surfaces and oak detailing and flooring.

As the plot is completely filled, the roof become central in order to provide communal outdoors space. This has been turned into a lush garden with public as well as secluded zones. Two of the flats also have their own private garden. On street level there is a tiny gallery offering art exhibitions to the public as a contribution to the local community.

The design is by KIMA architects and it was completed in 2011. The finished project won the Oslo City Architecture Award in 2012.
