Within the coastal fabric of Pantai Indah Kapuk, Platform Pilates by BHVR (Behavior) is anchored by a singular spatial gesture: a lobby that redefines arrival as a moment of quiet departure. As the project occupies a rented building, the design focuses on interior interventions that establish a distinct spatial identity without altering the primary structure.
Informed by the industrial language of New York’s subway stations, the design abstracts infrastructural references into a softer, more controlled interior expression. This is most evident in the continuous vaulted ceiling—an enveloping surface that extends seamlessly into the walls, dissolving the conventional boundary between horizontal and vertical planes. This unified geometry defines the lobby as both entry and anchor. “We wanted the volume to feel continuous and legible as a single gesture,” says Therresa Shannen Budihardjo. “By merging ceiling and wall, the space becomes less about surfaces and more about enclosure.”
The space accommodates reception, retail, lounge seating, and a smoothie bar within a single open volume. Programs are consolidated along the perimeter, allowing the center to remain unobstructed and adaptable for flexible use, including future activations and pop-up events. Lighting is integrated to reinforce the spatial continuity. Indirect linear illumination runs along the base of the walls, grazing the curved surfaces and emphasizing their form while maintaining a soft, even ambient condition.
Materially, the project balances industrial clarity with tactile softness. Dark, monolithic concrete elements anchor the perimeter, providing contrast against the lighter curved envelope. “The material palette was kept intentionally restrained,” notes Matthew Wirjan. “We worked with weight and texture to ground the space, while allowing the curved surfaces and light to soften its overall presence.” This interplay maintains the precision of an industrial language while introducing a more human-scaled atmosphere.
From this central volume, circulation extends to upper-level programs including a reformer studio, a private reformer room, and supporting wellness facilities such as showers, an infrared sauna, and a cold plunge. These spaces adopt a similar material and lighting approach, remaining intentionally secondary to the primary lobby. Through the integration of curved geometry, controlled lighting, and a restrained palette, Platform Pilates establishes a cohesive interior within the constraints of an existing building, where the transition from exterior to interior is clearly articulated through space.
