Overlooking Central Park along one of Manhattan’s most iconic avenues, this historic building, formerly a museum, has been transformed into a prestigious private residence. The project, remarkable for its scale and complexity, required a careful balance between the preservation of the architectural heritage and the integration of contemporary performance standards, under the strict supervision of the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Full compliance with the original shapes, dimensions, and appearance of the windows and doors was required. Each opening was therefore surveyed with millimetric precision and faithfully reproduced through bespoke elements, including large sash and casement windows, some featuring curved geometries in plan. While maintaining complete stylistic continuity, the new systems incorporate advanced technical solutions, achieving high levels of airtightness, thermal insulation, and acoustic performance—essential requirements in such a dense urban context.
A defining aspect of the intervention was the recovery of the original hardware. Handles, hinges, cremone bolts, and stays were carefully dismantled, cleaned, and restored, then adapted to custom concealed stainless steel mechanisms developed by Capoferri. This approach allowed the preservation of the building’s authentic appearance while ensuring smooth, durable, and fully functional operation. The casement and sash windows are made of Sipo Mahogany with a brush-lacquered finish.
