FLORIDABLANCA APARTMENT REFORM

The project consists of a complete refurbishment of a 60m2 flat located in the Eixample district of Barcelona.

The layout of the floor plan is in keeping with the typology of the buildings in the Eixample, with the spaces compartmentalised on one side of a long corridor. At the same time, it is partially conditioned by the geometry of the plot, which means that the courtyard area is cut at 45º with respect to the rest of the floor. Given its reduced surface area and the current floor plan, our intention is to generate a greater sense of spaciousness through a more fluid and flexible space.

The main strategy of the project is to locate the kitchen and storage areas distributed along two strips attached to the party walls, thus achieving a central space free of any fixed equipment. Two pieces of furniture are designed in cross-laminated timber and the same language is used for the living room and bedroom. The large sliding door that separates the bedroom from the living room-kitchen is designed as a mobile wall, allowing natural light to pass from one façade to the other and giving a feeling of spaciousness to the whole space.

We consider the presence of the constructive elements and materials typical of the Eixample dwelling to be particularly important in order to maintain its original character. The ceilings with existing mouldings are conserved and restored and the original hydraulic tile floor, which had remained in the original building, is recovered.

In order to give aesthetic unity and character to the house, a language is created that is composed of the new finishes introduced and the existing ones preserved. On the one hand, small-format pieces in three different colours are used to cover the walls and floor of the bathroom in blue-green, the laundry room in yellow and the kitchen in white.

This dialogue between new and old manages to create a unique, contemporary atmosphere in a building dating back to 1900.
