Renovation and extension of the Synagogue of Peace

Renovation and extension of the Synagogue of Peace

The Great Synagogue of Peace is the seat of the Jewish community in Strasbourg. It is located in the residential area of the Parc des Contades. Bordered by the Avenue de la Paix, the Rue de Turenne and the Rue du Grand Rabbi René Hirschler, it was built after the Second World War to replace the old synagogue destroyed by the Nazis in 1940. This place, steeped in history, is marked by a simple concrete architecture. The extension of the synagogue is intended to accommodate the faithful during religious festivities. It is inspired by the Torah and the Star of David motif. Like an unfolded book, a smooth concrete architecture develops on the forecourt of the former synagogue and envelops it on all the façades. Upon entering, the visitor will discover wooden trees whose branches form stars of David. This duality of architecture, concrete on the outside and wood on the inside, offers a warm and festive atmosphere.
