The old building has always rejected anonymity, declaring its presence with simple but clear architectural elements. It has several traces of industrial architecture of the early '900: the volumes pitched, the sequence of windows and frames of iron painted, framed by pilasters and entablatures in relief and the metal trusses hot-bolted. No new area is built up: there is a new program for the community, an artifact returns in a sustainable manner to public participation. The focus concept is to bring functional mixitè to ensure a general involvement: besides the new multi-purpose hall, the flagship of the intervention, a small retail mall will be allocated together with a post office, an ATM, a restoration area and offices.
The heart of the intervention system is the atrium distribution, that welcomes visitors with the central staircase which distributes the various activities. This space gives great attraction and representativeness because it’s the hinge between the old and the new: the skylights that are placed on the cover allow, when climbing the stairs, to admire the Roccaccia. The multi-purpose hall (232 seats), encloses the wonder of the sense of recovery: the two pitches of the roof recall the idea of a simple house, a cozy sharing and meeting place. In addition to the provision of the dressing and services, the same room has a flexible character, since it can release the space occupied by the seats, which can be stored under the stage. The project reorders the situation volumetric fragmented behind the mill, demolishing and reconstructing the existing buildings in a linear way, taking the shape of the existing building. We’ve been looking for a clear sign that distinguished the face that looks to Roccaccia, finding it in the sequence of the high vertical baffles. This rhythm and liveliness have the power to transform the entire building: a vital push through the interior, scans the walls of the foyer and arrives on the opposite side.
The old windows become new doors, as big eyes framed by profiles of cor-ten steel, and their basic arise flowerbeds rosemary, lavender and viburnum, so to involve not only the view but also the sense of smell. The dialogue of the materials used enhances the industrial memory: concrete floors are dusted with quartz, structures and metal trusses are painted in white, frames area made of cor-ten steel: everything is softened by finishes of wood paneling in larch and fir.
