Perched atop one of Udaipur’s tallest residential towers, The Sky Residence is a 6,000 sq.ft. private home envisioned for a closely connected multi-generational family spanning grandparents, siblings, and children. The project emerged through the merging of two expansive apartments on the tower’s uppermost floor, transforming an originally planned 8BHK configuration into a more intentional and spacious 5BHK residence tailored to contemporary family living.
What defines the residence most profoundly is its extraordinary relationship with the city beyond. From this elevated vantage point, Udaipur reveals itself in layered panoramas — the shimmering lakes, distant Aravalli ranges, dense grain of the old city, historic palaces, and the expanding urban skyline all becoming an integral part of everyday life within the home. The constantly shifting skyline became the foundation of the project’s central design concept: multiplicity.
Much like Udaipur itself, which appears unified from afar yet unfolds through countless distinct experiences at a closer scale, the residence was imagined as a collection of varied atmospheres unified within a singular architectural language. While the home maintains a cohesive visual identity, each space carries its own emotional quality, material expression, and spatial character. Existing walls were strategically removed and reconfigured to establish openness, fluid circulation, and uninterrupted visual continuity between the interiors and the city beyond, allowing light, views, and materiality to shape the experience of the home throughout the day.
One of the primary architectural challenges emerged from the configuration of the original apartments. While combining the two units opened expansive views toward both the eastern and western sides, the central entrance zone became an unusually narrow transitional spine. Rather than treating this bottleneck as a limitation, the design transformed it into one of the defining moments of the residence.
The entrance was envisioned not merely as a doorway to a private home, but as a symbolic gateway to the skyline of Udaipur itself. Since the essence of the project lies in its connection with the city, the arrival experience was designed to establish this relationship immediately. A custom-designed sliding entrance door crafted in teak wood and brass became the focal point of this idea, subtly reflecting the city’s landmarks and layered skyline through intricate detailing inspired by regional craftsmanship traditions. Rooted in the region’s artisanal traditions, the brass foil detailing combined with the warmth of natural teak wood lends richness and depth to the entrance while transforming a constrained threshold into a memorable architectural experience.
The living areas were envisioned as warm, understated, and deeply inviting, allowing natural light, textures, and panoramic views to remain the primary focus. Anchoring the formal living space is a striking peacock artwork by artist Kamal Sharma, creating a vibrant focal point that celebrates local artistic expression. In contrast, the bar overlooking Lake Fatehsagar introduces a more immersive and intimate atmosphere. Inspired by the mood of a contemporary speakeasy, the space embraces richer tones, layered lighting, and a dramatic material palette while framing uninterrupted views of the illuminated cityscape beyond.
The home further unfolds through a series of deeply personalised spaces. The temple was carefully designed to preserve both serenity and openness, allowing it to visually merge with the skyline beyond rather than disconnect from it. Each bedroom reflects the personality and sensibilities of its occupant — from the kid’s room inspired by soft Wabi-Sabi influences to the elder son’s room that reinterprets traditional Rajasthani craftsmanship through Tikri glass work and Pichwai-inspired detailing. In contrast, the parents’ suite embraces a calmer and more minimal aesthetic rooted in timeless simplicity.
Craftsmanship remains central to the identity of the project. Hand-carved wooden detailing, monolithic stone washbasins sculpted from single stone blocks, natural stone surfaces, brass foil work, and curated regional artworks collectively celebrate the tactile honesty of materials and the richness of local artisanal traditions.
At its core, The Sky Residence is more than a luxury apartment in the sky. It is an immersive reflection of contemporary Udaipur itself — layered, expressive, crafted, and constantly evolving between heritage and modern aspirations.
