The apartment on Ben Yehuda Street is a duplex with an area of 120 square meters on two floors, plus a 45 square meter roof overlooking the beaches of Tel Aviv. It's located in a typical Tel Avivian building from the 1980s, adjacent to the Brown Hotel. A family resides in the apartment, a couple with their two children aged 10 and 7.
On the first floor, there is a communal area, two children's bedrooms, and a bathroom, while the upper floor hosts the parents' suite and a spacious roof deck.
The initial conditions of the apartment were challenging. Its concrete ceiling is relatively low at 260 (prior to lowering). The staircase connecting the two floors is fixed in place, making it impossible to relocate, and expansion or enlargement of the staircase entrance was not feasible due to structural constraints of the rooftop.
The height of the apartment is not uniform, and a wall that was demolished between the communal space and the adjacent room exposed differences in ceiling heights, revealing an unexpected and unplanned concrete slab.
The couple, who had been renting nearby the sea for many years, had been searching for a property to buy in this area as they live and breathe the sea air daily. Naturally, the imagery of the coastal environment influenced the apartment's design, drawing inspiration from its location and their personal interpretation of the colors and shapes of Tel Aviv's beach and sea.
A staircase in Building "ח" was redesigned in a remodel to a spiral shape (a spiral staircase). The apartment's color scheme is in warm tones of brown/gray, with floor tiles made of textured porcelain granite resembling natural sandstone. A touch of blue (in the library) breaks the monotony.
The couple requested that the design not "take over" the apartment, allowing it to be present yet liberating and free.
