Toushi House

The suspended MDF ceiling becomes the defining element of the project, drawing inspiration from the volumetric compositions of traditional Oriental architecture and the enduring presence of wood in Chinese construction. Its intricate structure is a contemporary reinterpretation of Kigumi, the traditional Japanese art of joining wood through precisely designed interlocking connections, without the use of metal hardware. More than a construction technique, Kigumi expresses a precision, balance, flexibility, and longevity, bringing the intelligence of traditional craftsmanship into the architectural experience.

Within the tea room, an artistic installation presents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese Toushi panels, translating their cultural symbolism into a contemporary architectural expression. Together, these elements create a dialogue between Eastern traditions, craftsmanship, and contemporary design.

The flooring follows the same conceptual approach. An innovative and environmentally conscious solution combines carefully selected stone fragments embedded in concrete, reducing material waste while producing a refined and distinctive surface. Its subtle green tones and mineral character recall the resilience, strength, and serenity associated with jade, extending the project's cultural narrative into the materiality of the space.
