Traffic in and around Dieren used to regularly crash. Traverse Dieren has achieved a better traffic flow and a safe station environment. The area around the N348 through Dieren has undergone a huge transformation due to a complete reorganization of the road structure. The "Parklaan" features of the Hof te Dieren have been used as spatial quality in the urban traverse: "spacious with" grass-trees concept "and space for various traffic, accommodation and connection functions. By partially tunneling, the impact of the N348 on the environment has been significantly reduced. Stationsplein located on top of it has become the hub of Animal society.
In a "Design & Build" assignment, Rudo Cleveringa was the landscape architect and the Architecten_Lab designed the civil artworks on behalf of the "Combination Traverse Animals".
This artwork consists of a tunnel of the N348 in the center of the plan area in Dieren. An open tunnel has been realized, which is only closed at the Harderwijkerweg, the station square and the Wilhelminaweg to enable the grade-separated crossing. The sunken bicycle shed is located on the south side, in the armpit between the square and the tunnel.
The edge of the open tunnel body is autonomous and a robust object in the Parklaan. The edge is designed as an unambiguous gesture and also acts as a fall protection for the tunnel body. On the outside is an abstract grass motif that has been incorporated into the concrete as a deepened relief.
This texture determines the image and will give a more refined character to this autonomous object, especially when observed up close. Grass motif was chosen because it fits in nicely with the grassy ground level to which it connects. The cover edge is not sharp, but it is chamfered so that there are no empty soda cans or the like. can be placed on the edge.
A different balustrade has been applied where the ground level crosses over the tunnel body. This consists of a standing wooden slat structure. These slats are oriented parallel to the axis of the tunnel, so that an optimal view is created from the tunnel body. Stripes on the bottom of the deck reinforce the slat structure. To achieve road noise reduction, the walls of the tunnel body are covered with a sound-absorbing wood fiber concrete with vertical flutes.
Traverse Animals
For a safe and functional station environment, a pavilion on Stationsplein and an in-depth bicycle shed next to the square have been integrated into the Traverse Dieren project. Het Stationsplein has become the hub of animal society.
The Pavilion is a steel frame covered with vertical windows with an expressive roof volume in a light blue color. This color subtly gives a little more expression to the volume and also enhances the legibility of the IJssel theme on this side of the traverse and contrasts with the yellow world of the square.
The shape of the pavilion extends along the longitudinal axis in height. This gives more expression to the elongated structure and gives orientation through height accent towards the station and bus platform. The sloping roof provides a nice counter-movement from the tunnel with the sloping railing edge of the deck.
The bicycle shed on the “Stationsplein” road is half deepened in ground level, so that the spatial impact on public space is minimal. The difference in height between the vegetation roof and ground level creates an opening through which the bicycle parking for social safety is partially visible from the road. The roofs slope slightly towards the road, making the green character more visible to passers-by and local residents. The roofs remain in height under the edge of the tunnel that is more important in hierarchy in this spatial setting and so that the meeting remains logically "readable". There is no roof surface above the aisle of the garage, so that the garage has natural daylight and ventilation.
Railing for the balustrade edge at the transition with the square is a continuation of the balustrade of the tunnel body. This creates more cohesion on the square side. The wooden slats that are used here have the same orientation as the one at the tunnel body, but they continue as a covering in the bicycle shed.
The structure of the roof is a steel construction, which means that the whole remains slim and airy compared to the concrete tunnel body. The columns under the roof have been placed at an angle to experience as much openness in the garage as possible and to accentuate the sloping roof slopes. Between the roof and the retaining wall there is an interpretation by means of bars that, due to their arbitrary position, are an analogy on the grass.
