Villa in Campagna

LOCATION

The house is located in the countryside near the village of Manciano, in the province ofGrosseto in that part of the region of Tuscany known as the Maremma, bordering on theTyrrhenian Sea.

PROJECT- THE EXTERIOR

The project involved the new construction of a country house for the weekend, designedaccording to the traditional Maremma's type of farm. The building develops longitudinally, lowriseat the view coming from the access road.

The main spaces of living-areas and the owner's bedroom are in the upper floor that is built on asingle axis, and has a plan partition into three distinct bodies with the retreat of the central one, which houses the living area. The lateral bodies which provide one side to the kitchen area andthe owner's bedroom on the other, are thus divided planimetrically and reading elevations. In the basement, under the plan of the main floor, there are service areas and gaming andentertainment for the family, while a slightly lower , the house continues turning to the gardenbelow, hosting the area with rooms for guests. This part is covered by the terrace that extends infront of the living area of the top floor.

The language of the project was trying to follow the morphological characters closer to thetradition of the site and of the landscape with a contemporary interpretation.

The highest incidence in the character of the statements of an architecture such as that providedby the project, is given by the covering stones in sight , which occurs as an element of similaritywith the area . On the whole side facing north , facing the town of Manciano , in fact, therugged texture facade is covered in its entirety in local stone, with narrow openings for a lowerpower dissipation , and with the idea of creating a block of stone almost compact.

Different however, is the south facade, facing the sea which is about thirty miles , where theplaster finished in light typical yellow, alternating with the stone facade , defining the volumesof the three-body components of the upper floor of the house. The openings, dimensionally larger in the facades to the south, correspond to the spaces ofcollective life.

Bricks walls, alternating with stone walls , are to answer the function of guard rails in theterraces on different height levels. The lower volume that houses the guest rooms comes out following the slope of the land .All the exteriors flooring is in Pietra Peperino, a typical Tuscan stone, including the infinitypool area.

PROJECT – THE INTERIOR

Challenging conventional expectations about domesticity and modern taste, the interiorarchitecture creates an alternative to typical country living.

The white wooden structure of the roof is fully visible from inside and characterizes the spaces. On the ground the floor in gray resin recalls the gray stone Peperino of the exterior. The components of the interior design are fully based on light grey and white , includingfurnitures, like designed cabinets or bookshelves along the corridor that leads to the room.Therust coloured fireplace in the livingroom is actually the only spot of colour. The basement and the lower floor with the guests room, have warmer mood, with wooden floorand wooden beams and teracotta ceilings.

From every window and from every view, the wonderful landscape, comes in the house andbecomes part of it.
