Vintage House

An urban-style house surrounded by roads built on a plot set back from the road

Functional components such as the bedroom, closet, and bathroom are located on the first floor, while a living dining kitchen serves as the main living space on the second floor. Despite height restrictions and the limited size of the plot, the three-meter-high ceiling and single-room layout of the second floor ensures an expansive feeling of spaciousness.

As a way of maximizing the appearance of breadth, a variety of corners are nestled along the walls of the large unpartitioned space, including a kitchenette, a study nook, and bench seating. For the client, who previously lived in New York City, we have provided a space like SOHO and LOFT enabling the free arrangement of the living situation to suit personal tastes.

The placement of the windows also plays an important role in helping to create the appearance of spaciousness. The installation of audaciously large windows overlooking the spaces (gaps) between neighbouring buildings opens up the space by extending line of sight into the far distance. In addition, the installation of the high windows near the ceiling, in addition to allowing a sense of the sky, also enables a comfortable lifestyle that incorporates the light and breeze while ensuring privacy.

The interior concept is based on vintage-style materials and designs that convey the same sense of comfort that the client used to enjoy in New York City. Incorporating the raw structural beams and plywood in the ceiling directly into the design and making symbolic use of antique red bricks for part of the structure imbues the ambience of the space with the feeling of being simultaneously both newly built and comfortably broken in.

Despite not being well-blessed by the surrounding environmental conditions, we feel that we have been able to create a space of freedom that offers a special atmosphere in which to enjoy and be refreshed by time spent at home – a space that allows the client to feel the same level of comfort they enjoyed when they lived in New York City by enabling them to arrange their personal living situation in response to a changing lifestyle.
