The site for 'White Cube, Mangwoo' is located in the east side of Seoul in South Korea, overlooking a beautiful Mangwoo Mountain. The area has been designated as a redevelopment area for a long time but recently, development was cancelled on demand by residents.
After the redevelopment of MangWoo district was cancelled, the non-Architecture based contractor started their business. Unfortunately, there wasn't much concerns about aesthetic & living quality but economic perspective view within the projects. We, ArchiWorkshop.kr, was the first architecture firm to build multi-family housing in this area.
White Cube building has 4 stories with total net area of 200m2. The building consists 120m2 of small site area. The geometry of the building is white cubic shape. The color of ground floor and top floor are dark grey in order to accentuate the white geometry of the white cube. The neighbor buildings juxtaposed very closely and windows could not be opened properly during days and nights. In order to solve the problems, a white wall was erected. The sun light from the top reflected to the interior space, which then brightened the inner space. We called this space 'sunlight-balcony'. The four-season could be experienced from inside the house.
