Built on a small and irregularly shaped plot in the Kanda- Ochanomizu area of Tokyo, well known for its music stores, the Building of Music by Aisaka Architects' Atelier leaves a striking impression on passers-by.
The design integrates multiple functions like instrument rooms, a hall for recitals, equipment shops for professional recording, wholesale instruments storage and various offices to look after different aspects.
To facilitate the myriad functions, in a way that the interiors seamlessly adapt to the ever-changing needs, the structure incorporates a double skin that retains a uniform exterior appearance. In addition, a mesh membrane that moves slowly at high altitudes and can turn in all directions allows optimal light and air within.
Composed of polyester fibres coated with PVC resin, the fireproof exterior mesh prevents visibility from outside while allowing outdoor views. Additionally, the lightness of the membrane owing to its perforated texture reduces structural stress and enables ease of maintenance and reuse.
Taking inspiration from the shape of musical instruments, the building takes the form of a speaker emitting music to the neighbourhood via its mesh-covered facade.
