Made from Japanese cypress, known as “sugi” in Japan, Sugi Unoiled is a versatile, sustainably harvested wood siding and paneling product.
The subtly aromatic wood is coveted for both its appearance and durability. With its varied color—ranging from light tan to clay brown—straight grain, and light weight, Sugi Unoiled lends itself to virtually any exterior or interior application. In addition to its clean appearance, sugi is exceptionally durable. Its natural resistance to fungus, insects, borers, and fires ensures its longevity as a building material with minimal maintenance required. Sugi’s natural beauty and beneficial qualities are further enhanced by expert log production, grading, and millwork. The product is sourced directly from the Nakamoto family’s timberland in Japan, which they’ve owned and operated since the 1920s. The timberland is sustainably managed as demonstrated by a PEFC certification.
As the primary distributor of authentically milled sugi wood in North America, Nakamoto Forestry offers Sugi Unoiled in three profiles—15mm, 35mm, and 48mm—to support a range of applications from paneling and flooring to cabinetry and furniture. Sugi Unoiled is available in select grade, which includes knots, and premium clear grade, which is knot-free. When left unoiled, as is typical in Japan, sugi develops an elegant patina. However, standard stains and coatings can be applied to add color and consistency if desired. Nakamoto Forestry also offers a silver weathering stain, which develops a bleached coastal patina inspired by the Cape Cod gray aesthetic.
