A typical urban residential plot in Bengaluru, India, measuring 200 ft by 50 ft and oriented east–west with a gentle slope rising towards the west, comes with a unique twist. While two sides are bordered by dense housing — as is common in the city — the other two remain open. Most notably, the western edge opens out to a no man’s land atop a hill, guaranteeing no future construction and providing an uncommon sense of openness within the dense urban fabric.

The architects were commissioned to design a residence for a family of four, featuring four bedrooms and a casual hangout space on the terrace. The brief also called for a dedicated spa area and ample parking space. 

The design concept sought to reinterpret the site's original rocky terrain through architectural expression. This intent materialized in the form of a sculpted, curved façade wall, held between contoured concrete slabs that reference geological strata. The wall serves as both a spatial and experiential device—shaping distinct atmospheres on either side. Its varying treatments—solid, open, perforated, or articulated with clearstory openings—along with the modulated internal volumes, orchestrate a dynamic interplay between enclosure, light, and movement.

The initial design approach placed all common areas—such as living and dining spaces—towards the north and west, where open landscape views were available. Private spaces like the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms were positioned on the southern side for greater seclusion. The front of the house, facing east, was planned with a spacious open area that includes a garden, kennels, and a combination of dry and paved yards.

Given the natural slope up towards the west, the design strategically placed the main entry of the house on the first floor, allowing for a green backyard and patio at the rear. The ground floor, taking advantage of the lower level, was designated for parking. The second floor was dedicated entirely to three spacious bedrooms, each with an attached dressing area and bathroom. This level also includes a cozy sitting area, a spa, and a northeast-facing balcony that offers views of the main entrance and access road from the bedroom level. 

Given the clients' prominent social standing and large circle of friends, the entire third floor was dedicated to entertaining. The layout includes multiple zones for seating, a bar, a games area, outdoor seating, an open yard, and a utility space to support gatherings and events.
