Throughout the 18th century the "Alte Posthalterei" was a household name: Marie Antoinette, Napoleon, Prince Metternich, Zar Nikolaus I. and many more used to rest there on the busy travel route from Vienna to Paris. The historic building ensemble has been family-owned for a long time. With great enthusiasm OTT ARCHITEKTEN took on the challenge to bring back life to the historically protected building as a modern event location consisting of a hotel and a restaurant.
The history of people of different background and social class spending the night under the same roof was the main motif behind the interior design. Through her interior concept architect Ulrike Seeger tells a story of excessive luxury of the nobility as well as the simplicity of commoners lives. Thus the nearly 70 rooms of the hotel were split into the categories of "Prince Napoleon room", "noble room" and "carriage room" and designed accordingly.
"The main principle of the reconstruction was to preserve as much of the buildings original substance as possible and add to it in a contemporary way. The combination of strict regulations of historic preservation and the technical requirements of a highly modern hotel business was the biggest challenge next to the decaying building substance.“ says Wolfgang Ott about the architectural approach of the project. Old arches turned into rustic wine cellars, simple dormers flooding the historic roof truss with sunlight and and elaborately restored antique doors are reminders of times long gone.
Elements of modern architecture and the historic building seamlessly complement each other with the architects neatly orchestrating the transition between old and new: late baroque corridors come to a sudden halt at an extensive curtain wall glazing. A rustic farmhouse parlor corresponds with the restaurant’s modern design and the gabled roof of the outdoor sauna area consists of minimalistic metal grating.
"dahoim" (dialect for "at home") is the name of the restaurant inside the hotel Alte Posthalterei and the passion project of the tenants Marc and Manuela Schumacher. They both envisioned a place of encounters and wellness, that invites the visitor to return. The friendly and attentive service will make your stay as relaxing and pleasant as possible. In the end you will feel „dahoim“ - at home. The restaurant considers regionality the most important aspect of its philosophy. Thus the hotel operators work in very close cooperation with local suppliers and manufacturers. And in case the ingredients have a longer journey to the restaurant, high quality, sustainability and animal welfare are still of utmost importance. At the Schumachers "dahoim" the four seasons and the respective seasonal products are always taken into consideration. Marc Schumacher summarises: "Our cuisine stands for creative, seasonal and affectionately created dishes that will surprise and inspire you again and again."
