Beijing Residential

Occupying a 2.3 hectare site in central Beijing, the design of this residential project aims to create an oasis of calm in the city. Two 150m high residential towers are linked by a layered landscape, defining a semi-enclosed garden.

The design of the buildings and landscaping develops themes from traditional Chinese garden design in a contemporary way.The residential towers themselves are envisaged as elegant objects within the landscape and are positioned to take maximum advantage of natural light and views. The curved form of the towers allows the apartments to enjoy panoramic views over Beijing.

One tower contains three apartments per floor; the second has two luxury apartments on each level, while communal sky-gardens crown both buildings. The towers feature vertical openings in the facade on the north and south sides, allowing natural light into the central core and creating glazed elevators. The facade design is intended to balance high levels of insulation and prevention of excessive heat gain while still allowing good natural light and views.

The horizontal openings within the silver anodised aluminium cladding open up at balconies and are reduced in height at bedrooms and bathrooms to give a more intimate atmosphere.Communal facilities are housed below ground, allowing the landscaping to flow across the site. Light is brought down via a generous sunken courtyard which creates a shared space for the residents and further enhances the play of levels and organic forms of the garden design.

The landscape flows gently from the principal entrance to the sunken garden, heightening the sense of arrival and emphasising the tranquil heart of the site. The planting encourages biodiversity throughout the area, which is supported by proposals for the collection and recycling of rainwater.
