a void for convergences

Dual play between the opaque and the empty synthesizes the functions and intentions of the plastic in this country house near Curitiba, south Brazil.

Between two opaque blocks made of solid brick, a transparent window is covered by a light metal structure to cover the meeting area of this house in Almirante Tamandaré, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. The existing land offered a raised plateau, facing the street, and a large forest preserved in the back. Fortunately, the location of the forest coincided with the north, which directed not only all the openings of the house to receive the sunshine during the day, but the location of the deck integrated to the kitchen and the outside fire place. The house therefore opens with generous transparency to the back and the view of the preserved forest. The fire place develops on a lower level than the surroundings, surrounded by flowerbeds in apparent concrete, with wooden benches built into the structure, and the open hearth in the center. The wooden deck joins the open space between the future pool, the fire place and the vegetable garden. The deck provides spatial and visual continuity of the built-in space, where kitchen, dining and living are gathered between the two opaque blocks in apparent bricks. The amplitude of this space is reinforced by the flat cemented floor throughout, with the highest right foot under a large metal roof supported by pillars in apparent concrete.

For those who watch from the outside, especially from the south side of the house, one soon realizes an architectural of rapid assimilation. While the permeable span - surrounded by transparent glass - houses the social area of the house, the enclosed blocks guard the intimate area and services. This is probably the strongest feature in this project: the duality between open and closed. The permeable and obstructed. The textured and smooth. In a very simple, direct and elegant way, the volumetric composition reveals the functions that develop inside the house, through the projective manipulation of the full and the void.

"Perhaps because it is a material as old as the act of building it, the ceramic brick carries an ancestral familiarity. More than a sealing element, we like the brick for the meanings intrinsic to it." Yuri Vasconcelos.
