UNICA Architects as Architects

The project for the municipal cemetery of Fusignano, a few kilometers from the city of Ravenna, is conceived as an almost sculptural and autonomous volume in the landscape, in the pursuit of a contemporary classicism in both forms and materials.

The architecture stands on the outside as a white parallelepiped obtained by subtraction of volumes. Four monoliths clad in white Carrara marble host the loculi; a projecting roof pierced in the center frames the sky, inviting visitors to look up at the "beyond" above them.

The project space is defined by a central patio with a garden and impluvium that, like in the atrium of a Roman domus, characterizes its particular spatial perception. Entrances become openings of perspectives on the context, generating open views to the landscape and to the other existing cemetery spaces where limits between inside and outside are blurred.

A protective interior space that generates intimacy and recollection.
A space that puts whoever enters at the center of things.
An outdoor space open to the context that extends our gaze.
A place that can make us feel small compared to the surrounding things.
An intimate space for contemplation inviting us to recollection.
A space of reflection, silence and homage.

The green of the lawn, the concrete of the paving, the Carrara marble lining of the niches and the white plaster for the cantilevered floors are the only materials in the project. The olive tree in the central courtyard fits poetically as the only vertical presence in the space.

he project seeks a sense of stillness where architecture is interpreted as a silent gesture witnessing the suspension of time.
