In the heart of Gujarat's warm, arid climate near Karjan, Vadodara, The Continuum House seamlessly blends heritage preservation and contemporary adaptation within the village landscape. It pays tribute to ancestral legacy while meeting present-day living requirements, utilizing lime and traditional building methods to maintain a naturally cool interior.
The project faced challenges stemming from the preservation of adobe brick foundations. Retaining the existing foundation while erecting new walls posed complexities, necessitating careful retention of portions of the ground floor walls and delicate demolition of sections of the old structure. Preservation efforts extended to salvaging intricately carved elements and wood for future use. The linear plot dimensions of 17 feet x 90 feet presented drainage and sunlight issues, demanding meticulous attention during planning.
The construction of the Continuum House stood as a testament to ingenuity and considered design, blending simplicity, local expertise, and a commitment to lasting quality. Structural innovation emerged to address the absence of skilled RCC workers: a steel framework with I and T sections complemented by Kota stone slabs, ensuring resilience and adaptability. Lime plaster, chosen for harmonious integration with the original walls, promised cohesion and a lifespan exceeding a century. Salvaging and refurbishing doors, windows, and cupboards preserved heritage and minimized waste.
The design of the 90 feet linear house with a 17 feet width is intricately planned to suit the dynamics of a village lifestyle. Nestled between neighboring houses, shared walls foster a strong sense of community. The otla, the entryway, serves as a gathering spot, promoting interaction.
Stepping inside reveals a grand yet cozy living room adorned with a 15-foot high ceiling and a shallow dome, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Abundant south-facing openings invite natural light, and an extended shade regulates the interior climate. Practicality meets tradition in the design, harmonizing functionality with the rich tapestry of village life.
