Located in the dense urban context of Delhi NCR, Dr. Mahendran’s Pet Clinic is a compact interior architecture project that demonstrates how thoughtful design can overcome spatial limitations. Designed by 25cube Design Studio, the project transforms a 950 sq. ft. (88 sq. m) shell into a fully functional 1600 sq. ft. (148 sq. m) veterinary clinic through the strategic addition of a mezzanine level.

The client brief required a complete pet-care facility including reception and waiting areas, consultation and treatment zones, grooming space, operation theatre, kennel and cat-care areas, a pet store, and essential back-of-house support. The challenge was to accommodate these diverse functions while maintaining a calm, open, and welcoming atmosphere for both pets and their owners.

Instead of expanding horizontally, the design team opted for vertical expansion, introducing a mezzanine that enabled clear functional zoning. The ground floor houses the reception, waiting area, treatment room, grooming zone, and a dedicated locker and cat-treatment space. These areas are designed for ease of access and smooth movement. The upper level accommodates the pet store overlooking a double-height reception, along with the operation theatre and kennel spaces that require privacy, hygiene, and controlled circulation.

Circulation planning played a critical role in shaping the interior. Narrow corridors were avoided in favor of open sightlines and intuitive movement paths. The double-height reception visually connects both floors, allowing the clinic to read more like a welcoming retail environment than a conventional medical facility, enhancing the perception of space.

Material and color selections were guided by the clinic’s brand identity. Soft blues and yellows are paired with warm wood finishes to replace the sterility often associated with clinical interiors. This cohesive palette flows across both levels, creating visual continuity and a sense of familiarity.

Natural daylight enters from the east and west, illuminating the waiting and treatment areas during the day, while layered artificial lighting maintains clarity and depth after dark. Integrated storage solutions ensure efficiency and hygiene without visual clutter.

The completed clinic is a transformed spatial experience—efficient, warm, and inviting. The project highlights how intelligent planning and vertical design strategies can redefine compact interiors, turning a limited footprint into a fully realized veterinary care environment.
