House divided into two wings, with garden and swimming pool

Perched on an uneven hillside near a small village, this house was built to mirror its surroundings. Although larger than most neighbouring homes, it goes unnoticed, even to the watchful eye. The structure is unmistakably contemporary in its design, but the colour palette employed and materials used remain consistent with the local, traditional norm.

The house is split into two wings, both with two floors. The first and larger wing houses the family’s quarters and the second houses the guest rooms and a two-car garage. The wings were designed with the hill’s slope in mind and the bedrooms sit on the upper floor, above the living spaces and bathrooms. An exterior staircase, of a singularly simple design connects the two floors, and breaks up the stone-heavy structure.

Inside, another staircase links the upstairs office to a spacious living room which extends out onto a porch that can be opened in the warmer months, but remains closed and insulated during the winter. The pergola system of the southern facade also helps to keep the house cooler in the heat of the summer sun. Just beside the main building, there is a small building that serves as a tool shed and powder room, more convenient to the swimming pool.
