As urban density continues to increase across Indonesia, compact apartments have become an increasingly important housing typology for young professionals. Rather than viewing limited floor area as a constraint, this project explores how thoughtful interior architecture can transform micro living into a comfortable and highly functional everyday experience.
Designed by INSADA Integrated Design Team, these two show units, measuring 18 sqm and 22.5 sqm respectively, demonstrate how intelligent planning, multifunctional furniture, and restrained materiality can maximize the potential of compact residential spaces without compromising comfort or quality of life.
The first unit is an 18 sqm studio apartment conceived around the idea of Urban Modernist living. Clean geometries, subtle grey tones, and refined black detailing establish a contemporary aesthetic that reflects the lifestyle of young urban residents. Every design intervention is driven by efficiency, ensuring that every square meter contributes meaningfully to daily living.
Immediately upon entry, a fully equipped kitchen is integrated into a linear 1.6-meter layout containing a two-burner induction cooktop, sink, refrigerator, concealed washing machine, pull-out preparation surfaces, hidden spice storage, and shoe storage. High-gloss cabinetry, reflective glass surfaces, and concealed storage solutions reduce visual clutter while enhancing the perception of spaciousness.
Beyond the kitchen, a glass-front wardrobe and sliding glass bathroom enclosure continue the strategy of minimizing visual weight throughout the apartment. The bathroom combines patterned and clear glazing to balance privacy with openness, while carefully optimized fixtures—including an off-center faucet, semi-mounted vanity, and integrated storage—maximize usability within a highly compact footprint.
Rather than relying on transformable beds, the studio accommodates a full queen-sized bed to demonstrate that compact living need not compromise everyday comfort. Opposite the bed, a multifunctional feature wall integrates a television, concealed vanity, fold-down dining table, storage, and pull-out ironing board into a single architectural element. Throughout the apartment, lightweight furniture elevated on slender metal legs preserves uninterrupted floor visibility, creating a stronger sense of openness.
Material selection reinforces the spatial experience. Homogeneous tiles provide durability within service areas, while engineered timber flooring introduces warmth to the living space. Natural wood textures, subtle wallpapers, and carefully curated furnishings complete the interior with a restrained yet inviting atmosphere.
The second show unit expands the concept into a 22.5 sqm one-bedroom apartment, adopting a more mature Timeless Contemporary design language. Warm timber finishes, softer furniture silhouettes, textured fabrics, and black detailing create a calm interior intended to remain relevant beyond short-lived design trends.
Despite only four additional square meters, the apartment successfully incorporates a dedicated living room while maintaining generous sleeping and storage areas. A decorative partition subtly defines the living and bedroom spaces without interrupting visual continuity, while a full-sized two-seat sofa and lounge chair reinforce the feeling of a complete home rather than temporary accommodation.
The project's most distinctive feature is a sliding media wall that allows the television to move seamlessly between the living room and bedroom. Concealed behind this movable element are a 1.8-meter work desk, fold-down dining table, hidden vanity, integrated storage, and pull-out ironing board—illustrating how multiple daily activities can coexist within a remarkably compact footprint.
Throughout both apartments, the design prioritizes flexibility, visual lightness, and efficient spatial organization. Rather than maximizing furniture quantity, the project focuses on maximizing the performance of every architectural element.
These two micro apartments challenge conventional perceptions of small-space living, demonstrating that thoughtful interior design can significantly enhance everyday life regardless of floor area. By carefully balancing functionality, comfort, and contemporary aesthetics, the project presents an alternative vision for the future of high-density urban housing in Indonesia.
