As Indonesia's residential market continues to mature, many aging apartment developments face a common challenge: how can an existing building remain relevant to the expectations of today's luxury homeowners without requiring complete reconstruction? Trevor Tower in Gading Serpong explores this question through a comprehensive architectural and interior transformation that repositions an established residential tower into a contemporary high-end address.
Commissioned to redesign both the architecture and interiors, INSADA approached the project as a holistic reinvention rather than a conventional renovation. The objective was to elevate the property's market positioning while maximizing the value of its existing structural framework. Every intervention—from the residential layouts to the building façade and shared amenities—was carefully coordinated to create a cohesive architectural identity that reflects contemporary urban living.
The original development consisted primarily of compact one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments designed for high-density occupancy. Responding to changing residential preferences, the floor plates were entirely reconfigured into spacious two-, three-, and four-bedroom residences, with exclusive five-bedroom penthouses occupying the uppermost levels.
Working within an existing high-rise structure presented significant technical challenges. Combining multiple units required careful coordination of structural limitations, vertical services, plumbing systems, and mechanical infrastructure. Rather than treating these constraints as obstacles, the design process embraced them as opportunities to improve spatial quality. The introduction of VRV air-conditioning systems, together with the strategic rerouting of building services, allowed ceiling heights to be optimized while creating cleaner, more flexible interior spaces.
The transformation extends beyond the apartments themselves. One of the project's defining architectural interventions occurs at the podium, where a previously utilitarian parking structure has been reimagined as the building's public face. By selectively removing portions of the existing floor slabs, the design creates a generous double-height entrance lobby that establishes an immediate sense of arrival.
Natural light plays a central role in shaping this new experience. Large glazed openings introduce daylight deep into the lobby, while carefully selected materials create an atmosphere that is both timeless and contemporary. Italian travertine, book-matched marble, warm timber finishes, and refined metal detailing combine to establish a restrained palette that emphasizes texture, proportion, and craftsmanship rather than ornamentation.
The façade reinforces the tower's renewed identity through a composition of natural stone, high-performance glazing, and contrasting aluminum composite panels. Dark charcoal finishes are balanced with warm metallic copper accents, producing a contemporary architectural language that strengthens the tower's vertical expression while giving the building a distinctive presence within the rapidly evolving Gading Serpong skyline.
The shared amenities were conceived as an extension of the residents' living environment rather than standalone facilities. Adjacent to the lobby, a library and co-working lounge provide flexible spaces for reading, informal meetings, and remote work. Warm wood paneling, integrated shelving, acoustic ceilings, and transparent partitions create an environment that supports both productivity and relaxation.
A new podium extension accommodates the wellness facilities, including a fully equipped fitness center, yoga studio, and spa jacuzzi. Here, filtered daylight enters through timber louver systems, creating constantly changing patterns of light and shadow across textured natural stone surfaces. The result is a tranquil retreat that offers a quiet contrast to the surrounding urban environment while drawing inspiration from tropical hospitality design.
Completing the transformation is the redesign of the tower crown. A new rooftop pavilion introduces a strong architectural silhouette that visually anchors the building within the city skyline. Framed in dark architectural elements and complemented by warm timber detailing, the crown provides a recognizable identity while bringing coherence to the building's overall composition.
Trevor Tower demonstrates how architectural transformation can extend the lifecycle of existing buildings through thoughtful planning rather than replacement. By combining spatial reconfiguration, technical innovation, and a carefully curated material palette, the project creates a renewed residential environment that responds to evolving lifestyles while preserving the structural value of the original development.
