LEED Gold for Spain´s first “green” data centre

· MAD2 is the first data centre in Spain to obtain LEED Gold certification.

· The data centre is owned by European specialists in hosting services Interxion.

LEED is an internationally recognised certification promoted by the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainable buildings.

The data centre, owned by European specialists in hosting services Interxion, makes use of redundant cooling and power systems and has advanced security and monitoring systems. It was built to cope with a high-density environment and was designed using energy efficient modular architecture, including free-cooling, component systems and maximum efficiency management standards.

Arup set out the sustainability strategy for the construction phase of the building, which included energy efficiency consultancy, and coordinated the design process. Arup also coordinated the process of obtaining LEED-NC certification.

"This certification is the result of a continued advocacy for sustainability in data centres. Building high energy efficient, low carbon footprint data centres is a must for us. We are aware that our ability to leverage resources has an impact on our customers and society as a whole. Data centres consume large amounts of energy and so it is very important to rationalize waste disposal and use energy from renewable sources.”
