Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego

TEF Design as Architects

Located on UC San Diego’s East Campus, the Shiley Eye Institute is the only academic institution in the area with comprehensive programs for the clinical care of patients with eye disorders, cutting edge research on surgical techniques and treatments of eye diseases, education in the field of ophthalmology and community outreach. Housed in a modernist three-story, 17,239-square-foot building that was completed in 1991, it houses clinical and office space on the first two levels and OR facilities on the third floor.

TEF was selected to design the conversion of the second floor that will be relocating to the adjacent new Viterbi Family Vision Research Center into clinical space. The project entails upgrading the building and circulation to meet current building codes, seismic upgrades required by University of California | Office of the President (UCOP) policy, accessibility, as well as infrastructure upgrades (HVAC, electrical, and plumbing). Repair of water intrusion issues into the building will also be a focus, as will a modest exterior architectural refresh. The project is employing a Target Value Design (TVD) process, ensuring that the design maximizes the program, adheres to the established schedule and cost, and supports efficiencies within the project.

The Shiley Eye Center Renovation is funded in part by a gift from philanthropist Darlene Shiley. The project is set to begin construction in September 2023.
