Tinbeerwah Residence

Gavin Maddock Design Studio as Design

The clients required a new kitchen and living area. To take advantage of the fabulous distant valley views on the property, gavin maddock design studio sited this extension on the opposite end of the existing residence. The original workers cottage was retained and seamlessly refurbished into the design to serve as the bedroom wing of this hinterland residence. The existing living area was remodelled as the new master bedroom. The new entrance lobby that accommodates the Guest WC pod, is wedged between the new extension and the existing structure, a mechanism that allows the orientation of views. The double height pod structure connects the lower garage level with the living level through the stairwell volume, serving as a feature element off the diningroom. The cantilevered roof of the external deck jutting out toward the view, intersects the generous 3,5m ceiling height through the living and dining area at a lower level allowing for clerestory windows for light and ventilation. Folding sliding doors maximise the large opening to the deck with access from the living and dining area. The client’s Asian art and sculpture collection is provided for by way of a small gallery off the entrance lobby as well various ledges and joinery units. An internal daybed located at the corner of the livingroom cantilevers out of the structure, taking in the valley views.
