Freestanding Residence at the River Main
House ZdM9 is a freestanding private residence on a remote site close to the city of Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
The site sits directly at the river Main and is adjacent to a nature reserve to the west. The design of the house reflects the fantastic quality of the environment. It is orientated towards the river and the nature reserve. Openings in the volumes at the south guarantee sun light to be caught. Windows at the ground and top floor are positioned carefully for a maximum of visible connection to the nature but a minimum to and from the public areas.
The area of a former horse farm has been declared as an area for residential development surrounded by a flood protection wall as it is located in a flood area of the river Main. The particularity of the site is therefore the nature itself, in its beauty as well as its threatening characteristics.
A solid base in hammered concrete protects the house against flooding and creates privacy from the street due to the raised ground floor. Two underground floors allow space for all technical equipment’s, a secondary suite and a parking garage.
The house rests above the base, creating a contrasting element that is expressed through the use of white render and wooden shutters protect the extensive balcony on the upper floor against glare and heat.
Recently “House ZdM9” has been longlisted for the German House of the Year Award.
