MAVI Calypso is a series of tapestries representing “the colors of the Mediterranean Sea where I was born” — Işıl Çağatay.
Technique and imagination are the protagonists of this project.
Like ancient tapestries once created by weaving warp and weft, the MAVI Calypso collection reimagines them using a very thin sheet of precious metal — copper, brass, and others — as the support. On this surface, the designer experiments and discovers ever-new colors and shapes:
“Once I have determined the technique I apply, I let the slabs be free to naturally oxidize, and only then do I intervene to highlight and interpret some points, some shapes and shades. It is always a discovery — like finding objects at the bottom of the sea that become small treasures in the sunlight.”
Made with Planium metal, a guarantee of qualitative perfection, the MAVI Calypso line expresses the full creativity of Işıl Çağatay. The texture — with its original pattern imprinted through oxidation — evokes the ever-changing water of the sea and its eternal flow.
Infinite, inexhaustible waves mix color and sensations. Shaded, irregular tones awaken continuous wonder in the eyes of those who pause to look.
Each slab can be easily fixed with steel cables to the ceiling and floor, placed against a wall, or arranged as a room-dividing panel.
